Sculptra

Sculptra is an injectable poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) biostimulator designed to stimulate the body’s own collagen production. Rather than creating an immediate filler-like change, it works progressively to improve facial support, firmness and the appearance of age-related volume change over time.

What it is and how it works

Sculptra is an injectable treatment containing poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biocompatible synthetic material with a long history of medical use. Unlike a conventional hyaluronic acid dermal filler, Sculptra is primarily used as a collagen biostimulator. Following injection, the PLLA particles stimulate a tissue response that encourages new collagen formation and remodelling of the extracellular matrix. The aim is gradual improvement in facial support, volume, firmness and skin quality rather than an immediate change in facial shape. Because the response develops progressively, Sculptra can appeal to people who prefer a subtle, gradual approach to facial ageing.

What it may help with

• Stimulates the body’s own collagen production
• Produces gradual rather than sudden aesthetic change
• Can help restore age-related facial support and volume
• Can improve the appearance of facial wrinkles and folds where appropriate
• Can contribute to improvements in firmness and overall skin quality
• Results develop progressively
• Effects can last considerably longer than many short-term injectable treatments
• Can form part of a broader facial rejuvenation plan

Suitable for

Sculptra may be suitable for adults experiencing age-related facial volume change, loss of support, reduced firmness or facial wrinkles and folds who prefer a gradual biostimulatory approach. It may also appeal to patients who do not want the more immediate volumising effect associated with conventional hyaluronic acid dermal filler. Sculptra is not appropriate for every facial concern or anatomical area. A full facial assessment is needed to determine whether a biostimulator, dermal filler, skin treatment or combination approach is most appropriate.

Areas treated

Treatment areas depend on individual anatomy, clinical assessment and the indications applicable to the product being used.

Sculptra can be considered as part of broader facial rejuvenation where age-related changes in facial support, volume, wrinkles and folds are present. It is not used in the same way as conventional filler for precise enhancement of every individual facial feature.

Treatment planning should follow current product information and appropriate injection technique.

What happens on the day

Your consultation begins with an assessment of facial structure, skin quality, volume distribution and the changes you would like to address. If Sculptra is appropriate, we discuss the likely treatment course, expected gradual nature of the result, limitations, alternatives and potential risks. The product is prepared according to the manufacturer’s instructions and injected into selected areas using an appropriate technique. The treatment plan and amount used are individualised. Sculptra is commonly performed as a series rather than a one-off treatment. Galderma describes a typical treatment journey of approximately three sessions over a few months, although the appropriate number varies between individuals.

Downtime and Aftercare

Temporary swelling, redness, tenderness and bruising can occur after treatment. The injected fluid can initially create an appearance of fullness, but much of this early effect reduces as post-treatment swelling and fluid settle. This should not be confused with the final Sculptra result, which develops gradually through the subsequent collagen response. You will receive specific aftercare instructions and information about symptoms requiring review.

Risks and side effects

Common temporary effects can include swelling, redness, tenderness, bruising and discomfort at injection sites. Other possible adverse effects include palpable lumps, papules or nodules, asymmetry, infection, inflammatory reactions and an unsatisfactory aesthetic result. Some nodules can appear later rather than immediately after treatment. As with injectable procedures, important complications can occur. The relevant risks, alternatives and aftercare will be discussed during consultation before you decide whether to proceed.

Contraindications

Sculptra may not be appropriate in certain circumstances, including active infection or inflammation in the treatment area, relevant allergy or hypersensitivity, certain medical conditions, or factors affecting healing or treatment risk. Pregnancy or breastfeeding, current medicines, previous injectable treatments and any history of abnormal scarring or previous complications should be discussed during consultation. Suitability and treatment areas will be assessed according to your medical history, anatomy and current product information.

The fullness immediately after treatment is partly related to injected fluid and swelling and is not the final result. The longer-term effect develops gradually as collagen remodelling takes place. Visible improvement can begin from around one month, with further changes developing over subsequent months.
