UltraClear® Laser Resurfacing

A more intensive UltraClear® fractional laser treatment for people looking to address visible photoageing, fine lines, uneven texture, age spots and selected acne scars. Using the 2910 nm cold fibre laser, treatment can reach the epidermis and dermis at customised depths to combine surface renewal with deeper tissue remodelling, while typically involving less downtime than traditional aggressive ablative resurfacing.

What it is and how it works

UltraClear® Laser Resurfacing is the next step up from our lighter UltraClear Laser Facial. Where the Laser Facial focuses mainly on superficial refreshment, this treatment is designed to address more established changes such as fine lines, uneven texture, photoageing, age spots and selected acne scars. UltraClear can deliver fractional ablative energy at different depths. Depending on the concern, treatment can target the epidermis, the dermis, or combine superficial and deeper treatment within the same session. The objective is twofold: controlled removal and renewal of damaged surface tissue, together with a deeper wound-healing response associated with collagen remodelling. The precise intensity is individualised. “Laser Resurfacing” therefore describes a treatment level rather than one fixed machine setting.

What it may help with

• More corrective than the UltraClear Laser Facial
• Can improve visible photoageing
• Can improve fine lines and wrinkles
• Can improve uneven skin texture
• Can reduce selected age spots and pigmentation associated with photodamage
• Can improve selected acne scars
• Can combine superficial resurfacing with deeper tissue remodelling
• Fractional treatment leaves intervening untreated skin to support recovery
• Depth and intensity can be customised to different concerns and facial areas
• Uses 2910 nm cold fibre laser technology designed to limit residual thermal injury

Suitable for

UltraClear® Laser Resurfacing may be suitable for adults with more noticeable sun damage, fine lines, wrinkles, uneven texture, age spots or selected acne scarring who want a stronger treatment than a superficial laser facial. It can also be useful when several concerns coexist — for example, surface pigmentation together with textural change and fine lines. The appropriate treatment depth depends on the severity and depth of the concern, skin type, medical history, previous procedures and the amount of downtime you are comfortable with. Very deep wrinkles, significant laxity or more severe scarring may require a more intensive UltraClear treatment strategy, including deeper resurfacing or Laser-Coring™, which we discuss separately.

Areas treated

Depending on assessment and the selected treatment mode:
• Face
• Periorbital / eye area where appropriate
• Cheeks
• Perioral / mouth area where appropriate
• Neck
• Décolletage
• Selected acne-scarred areas
Different areas may be treated at different depths within the same overall treatment plan.

What happens on the day

Your consultation includes assessment of skin type, pigmentation, photoageing, wrinkles, texture, scarring, previous procedures and medical history. The treatment plan is then designed around the depth of the concerns rather than selecting one universal setting. Topical anaesthetic and other comfort measures may be used depending on treatment intensity and area. Appropriate eye protection is worn throughout the procedure. The UltraClear handpiece delivers fractional 2910 nm laser energy in a controlled pattern. The clinician can alter depth, coverage and thermal effect according to the treatment goal. Some areas may receive more superficial treatment while areas with deeper textural change or scarring can be treated differently. After treatment, the skin will look and feel significantly more treated than after the lighter Laser Facial. You will be very red for several days.

Downtime and Aftercare

For the moderate treatment level, UltraClear currently describes approximately 3–5 days of downtime. Redness, warmth and swelling are expected. The skin can subsequently become dry, rough or bronzed and then exfoliate as the treated surface renews. The degree of swelling and visible recovery depends on treatment depth, coverage, anatomical area and individual response. More intensive or combined treatments can require longer recovery. Gentle skincare, careful aftercare and strict sun protection are important while the skin barrier recovers. You should plan treatment around important social or work commitments rather than assuming that every patient will be fully presentable at exactly the same point.

Risks and side effects

Expected effects include redness, warmth, swelling, tenderness, dryness, roughness, crusting or peeling during recovery. Potential complications include prolonged redness, infection, acne or inflammatory eruptions, reactivation of cold sores, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, persistent textural change and, rarely, scarring. Any ablative laser treatment can produce pigmentary complications, particularly if treatment parameters, aftercare or sun exposure are inappropriate. UltraClear is promoted by the manufacturer for use across Fitzpatrick skin types I–VI, but this does not remove the need for careful patient selection and individual parameter adjustment, particularly in melanin-rich skin. The risk profile increases as treatment depth and intensity increase, so the proposed level of resurfacing and expected recovery will be discussed before treatment.

Contraindications

Treatment may need to be postponed or avoided where there is active infection, significant inflammation, recent tanning or excessive sun exposure, impaired wound healing, certain medical conditions or medicines that increase treatment risk. A history of cold sores, pigmentary complications, abnormal scarring, previous laser reactions, recent aesthetic procedures and current active skincare should be discussed. Pregnancy or breastfeeding and other relevant medical circumstances will also be considered. A full medical and skin assessment is required before treatment.

The Ultra mode is designed to reach the dermis and the manufacturer includes scars and acne scars among its treatment targets. However, acne scars vary considerably in type and depth. Rolling, boxcar, ice-pick and tethered scars may require different treatment strategies or combination treatments, so scar assessment is important before recommending laser resurfacing.

Surface improvements can become visible during the first few weeks as the skin heals and exfoliates. Deeper collagen-related changes develop more slowly and can continue over subsequent months. The final result should therefore be assessed after the tissue-remodelling phase rather than immediately after the visible downtime has ended.
