What it is and how it works

Lip filler uses hyaluronic acid gel to add shape, definition or hydration to the lips. It can restore volume lost with age, sharpen the lip border, or even out asymmetry. The aim is to balance with the rest of your face, not size. Small amounts placed precisely often make the biggest difference.

What it may help with

  • Natural-looking shape and definition
  • Improved hydration and smoothness
  • Can correct mild asymmetry
  • Results visible straight away
  • Can be dissolved if needed

Suitable for

Adults who would like fuller, more defined or more balanced lips. It also suits people whose lips have thinned with age, or who have fine lines around the mouth.

Areas treated

  • Lip volume
  • Lip border and Cupid’s bow
  • Lip asymmetry
  • Lip hydration
  • Lines around the mouth
  • Mouth corners

What happens on the day

Your clinician discusses the shape you’d like and checks your medical history, including any history of cold sores. Numbing cream is applied and the filler also contains a local anaesthetic. Filler is placed with a fine needle or cannula, depending on the area and technique. Your clinician will check symmetry as they go and show you the results before you leave.

Downtime and Aftercare

Lips swell more than other areas, so expect them to look fuller than the final result for two to three days. Bruising can take up to a week to fade. For 24 to 48 hours, avoid lipstick, hot drinks through a straw, strenuous exercise, alcohol, and kissing. A two-week review checks how the lips have settled.

Risks and side effects

Swelling, bruising, tenderness and small lumps are common and usually settle. Treatment can trigger a sold sore in people prone to them. Less commonly, infection or lasting lumps can occur. Extremely rare, filler can block a blood vessel, which needs urgent treatment. Your clinician will explain all risks before you decide.

Contraindications

Lip filler is not suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active cold sore or infection on the lips, or are allergic to hyaluronic acid or local anaesthetic. Tell your clinician about any blood-thinning medication or recent dental work.

Concerns this treatment may help

  • Tired eyes, thinning lips or crepey neck

  • Asymmetry and Imbalance

Frequently Asked Questions

The amount used depends on your existing lip anatomy, previous treatments and the result you would like to achieve. More filler does not necessarily produce a better result, and in some cases a staged approach may be preferable.

Lip filler can cause some discomfort because the lips are a sensitive area. Measures can be used to make treatment more comfortable, and many dermal fillers also contain local anaesthetic. We will explain what to expect and the options available to improve comfort before treatment.
