What it is and how it works

Microneedling uses a medical device with very fin needles to create tiny, controlled channels in the skin. This triggers the skin’s natural healing response, stimulating new collagen and elastin. Over a course of treatments, skin becomes smoother, firmer and more even, with refined pores and softer scaring. You can have microneedling on its own, or with exosomes. Exosomes are applied to the skin to support calmer recovery and enhance the skin-renewal process.

What it may help with

  • Improves texture and enlarged pores
  • Softens acne scars and fine lines
  • Boosts collagen using your skin’s own repair
  • Results build and improve over time

Suitable for

Adults with uneven texture, enlarged pores, acne scarring, fine lines or dull skin. It suits most skin tones, and your clinician will tailor the depth and settings to your skin.

Areas treated

  • Full face
  • Acne scarring
  • Enlarged pores
  • Neck
  • Décolletage

What happens on the day

Your skin is cleansed and your clinician moves the device across the skin in sections, adjusting the depth for each area. A soothing serum, or exosomes if you’ve chosen them, is applied afterwards. Most people have a course of three to six session, spaced four to six weeks apart.

Downtime and Aftercare

Skin will look red and feel warm, like mild sunburn, for one to three days. It may feel tight or flake slightly as it heals. For 24 hours, avoid make-up, excercise and saunas. For a week, use gentle skincare, avoid active ingredients such as retinols and acids, and wear SPF 50 daily.

Risks and side effects

Common effects include redness, swelling, dryness, flaking and pinpoint bleeding during treatment, which settle within days. Less commonly, breakouts, infection, cold sore flare-ups or changes in pigmentation can occur, particularly in deeper skin tones. Your clinician will explain all risks before you decide.

Contraindications

Microneedling is not suitable if you have active acne, a skin infection or cold sore in the area, or are pregnant. It may also be unsuitable if you scar easily or have taken certain acne medication in the past six months. Tell your clinician about blood-thinning medication, recent tanning or any skin conditions.

Concerns this treatment may help

  • Acne, redness or uneven skin tone

  • Dull, dry, or rough-textured skin

  • Lines and Wrinkles

Frequently Asked Questions

Microneedling creates controlled microscopic channels in the skin. This triggers a wound-healing response and tissue remodelling, including processes involved in collagen production. The result develops gradually rather than producing immediate facial volume.

This depends on the concern being treated. A single treatment may be chosen for general skin refreshment, while concerns such as acne scarring commonly require a course. We will recommend a treatment plan after assessing your skin and response.

Exosomes are small extracellular vesicles involved in communication between cells. They can carry proteins, lipids and other signalling molecules. Exosome-containing skincare products are being investigated as adjuncts to aesthetic procedures, but formulations differ considerably and clinical evidence is still developing.

It is too early to say that exosomes are universally better. Early studies of extracellular-vesicle and exosome-based adjuncts are promising, but the evidence base is smaller and less standardised than that for microneedling itself. We therefore offer the exosome option as an adjunct rather than suggesting it is essential for a good microneedling result.
