Concerns
Lines and Wrinkles
Frown line, forehead lines, crow’s feet and lines around your lips that linger even when your face is relaxed? Find out what is causing them and which options suit you,
What you might be noticing
Lines between the brows that make you look cross or tired. Horizontal lines across your forehead and neck. Fine creases at the corner of the eyes when you smile, which start to linger. Makeup may settle into lines, and they can look deeper in photos or under harsh light.
Why it happens
There are two kinds of line. Dynamic lines form when muscles contract, such as frowning or squinting. Over years, repeated movement creases the skin and you form Static lines. These stay visible at rest. They appear as collagen and elastic in the skin decline, from about 1% a year from your mid-twenties. Sun exposure, smoking, poor sleep and genetics speed this up.
How we assess it
Every treatment plan at Palmeira Clinic in Brighton and Hove starts with a consultation with our medical team, in three steps:
Your concerns and goals
We listen to what’s bothering you and what you’d like to achieve.
A thorough assessment
We review you medical history and examine your skin and features to understand the cause.
Honest advice
We explain what may help, what won’t, and any risks, so you can decide without pressure.
Treatments we may discuss
Depending on your assessment, your clinician may talk you through one or more of the options below. Not every option suits everyone, and we’ll only recommend treatment where we think it’s appropriate.
What you can do at home
- Wear SPF 30 or higher every day, all year round, even if you are indoors or it’s a cloudy day. UV is the single biggest driver of early lines.
- Use a retinoid if your are suitable. Vitamin A products are among the best-researched ingredients for fine lines. Start slowly, and avoid in pregnancy.
- Keep skin hydrated with a moisturise suited to your skin type.
- Wear sunglasses to reduce squinting and protect the delicate skin around your eyes.
- Don’t smoke (or vape), and prioritise sleep. Both make a visible difference to skin over time.
- Sleep on your back if you can.
