Ageing & Preventative Skincare

A personalised skincare programme designed to protect skin from preventable damage and address early or established signs of skin ageing. We combine clinical assessment with our skin analyser where useful, then build a practical routine around daily photoprotection, antioxidants, retinoid-type skincare, hydration, barrier support and other evidence-led ingredients selected for your skin.

What it is and how it works

Skin ageing is influenced by both intrinsic biological ageing and external factors, particularly cumulative ultraviolet exposure. Over time, changes occur in collagen and elastin, epidermal turnover, pigmentation, hydration and the extracellular matrix. These can contribute to fine lines, uneven pigmentation, dryness, rougher texture, reduced elasticity and a general change in skin quality. Preventative skincare cannot stop ageing, but it can reduce avoidable environmental damage and support healthier skin over time. For established changes, targeted active ingredients can improve particular features of photoaged skin. The aim is not to create a complicated ‘anti-ageing’ routine, but to identify the small number of interventions most likely to benefit your skin.

What it may help with

  • Personalised according to your stage of skin ageing and priorities
    • Can incorporate digital skin analysis and baseline imaging
    • Focuses on prevention as well as correction
    • Helps protect against further photoageing
    • Can improve the appearance of fine lines and uneven texture over time
    • Can address pigmentation and dullness where appropriate
    • Supports hydration and skin-barrier function
    • Simplifies unnecessary or duplicated products
    • Can complement IPL, UltraClear®, microneedling and injectable skin-quality treatments
    • Provides a long-term maintenance strategy rather than a short-term ‘anti-ageing’ fix

Suitable for

Ageing & Preventative Skincare may be suitable if you: • want to start protecting your skin before significant visible ageing develops • are beginning to notice fine lines or textural changes • have sun damage or uneven pigmentation • feel your skin has become duller or drier • want to maintain skin quality alongside aesthetic treatments • are unsure whether you need retinol, vitamin C, peptides or other active ingredients • have accumulated too many ‘anti-ageing’ products • want an evidence-led routine rather than following skincare trends The programme can be appropriate at different ages because prevention and treatment goals are adjusted to the individual.

Areas treated

  • Face
    • Eye area
    • Neck
    • Décolletage
    • Hands

Products and active ingredients are selected according to the area. Skin around the eyes and on the neck can be more sensitive than other facial areas, so the same concentration or frequency is not necessarily appropriate everywhere.

What happens on the day

We discuss what you have noticed changing in your skin, what you would like to preserve or improve, previous sun exposure, current skincare, sensitivity, medicines and any aesthetic treatments you are having or considering. Where useful, our skin analyser can document pigmentation, redness, texture and other visible features and provide a baseline for future comparison. We review your existing routine and identify what is useful, what is duplicated and what may be unnecessary. Your programme is then built around a manageable morning and evening routine. Active ingredients are introduced at a frequency your skin can tolerate, rather than automatically starting with the strongest formulation. We can also coordinate skincare with procedures so that your home routine supports rather than conflicts with your treatment plan. The exact routine is personalised. Options may include: • Broad-spectrum sunscreen – the foundation of preventative skincare because ultraviolet exposure is a major contributor to premature skin ageing and pigmentation. • Retinoid-type skincare – vitamin A derivatives are among the best studied topical approaches for photoaged skin and can improve fine wrinkling and aspects of texture and pigmentation over time. Prescription retinoids require individual assessment. • Vitamin C and other antioxidants – may help support photoprotection and address oxidative stress when used alongside sunscreen rather than instead of it. • Niacinamide – can support barrier function and may help with aspects of pigmentation and skin appearance. • Alpha-hydroxy acids – may be used selectively for surface texture and pigmentation where appropriate. • Peptides – may be incorporated into some routines, although evidence varies considerably between formulations. • Ceramides, glycerin, hyaluronic acid and other moisturising ingredients – help maintain hydration and barrier function. Not every patient needs every active. Consistent use of a well-designed routine is usually more useful than continually adding new products.

Downtime and Aftercare

There is no procedural downtime, but active skincare can require an adjustment period. Retinoid-type products and exfoliating acids can initially cause dryness, mild peeling, tightness or irritation. These effects can usually be reduced by introducing products gradually and supporting the skin barrier. Significant burning, persistent redness or marked peeling is not required for skincare to be effective and should prompt review of the routine. If you are having IPL, UltraClear® or another procedure, selected active ingredients may need to be paused temporarily.

Risks and side effects

Potential effects include dryness, peeling, redness, irritation, burning, allergic or irritant contact dermatitis and increased sensitivity to sunlight from some active ingredients. Overuse of retinoid-type products, acids or multiple exfoliating products can compromise the skin barrier. Certain active ingredients and prescription treatments are unsuitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Prescription skincare has additional contraindications and potential adverse effects and requires appropriate clinical assessment and prescribing.

Contraindications

Pregnancy or breastfeeding, eczema or other inflammatory skin disease, allergy, very sensitive skin, current medicines, recent procedures and previous reactions can influence which active ingredients are suitable. A changing, bleeding or non-healing skin lesion should not be treated as routine skin ageing and requires appropriate medical assessment. Patients with significant dermatological disease may require dermatology input alongside or instead of cosmetic skincare.

There is no single age at which everyone should begin. Daily sun protection is useful from an early age, while targeted active ingredients can be introduced according to your skin, concerns and tolerance. For prevention, consistent broad-spectrum sun protection is fundamental because cumulative ultraviolet exposure is a major contributor to premature skin ageing and pigmentation. Other ingredients such as retinoid-type skincare and antioxidants can then be selected according to your individual skin.

Not everyone has to use a retinoid, but vitamin A derivatives are among the most studied topical ingredients for photoaged skin. The appropriate product, strength and frequency depend on your skin and tolerance. Some people need a gradual introduction or an alternative approach.

Skincare and procedures do different things. A good home routine can protect the skin, improve selected concerns and help maintain procedural results, but it cannot reproduce every effect of IPL, fractional resurfacing or other treatments. We can combine them when this provides a more appropriate overall plan.
